90% of the heating needs of the James Residence are satisfies by the sun. If the sun is shining these needs are met passively through the southern glazing and internal thermal mass. As well, during the heating season thermal solar panels pump heat into an insulated vault of gravel located directly under the concrete floor. This heat then radiates throughout the house allowing the building to coast through a week of overcast skies, while maintaining an interior temperature of close to 20 degrees C. When, occasionally, a small boost is needed, a wood-stove easily brings the temperature back to the comfort zone. Estimated annual wood use is under a cord – about $200.
